With 2020 in your rearview mirror, it's time to get pumped about the future of your online fitness business. January is always the busiest month for the fitness industry, and we want to help you get prepped for the big rush. By planning, you can avoid any last-minute scrambling and set yourself up for a strong beginning to 2021.

Use this checklist as a guide to your January kick-off.

Break your goals down ✅

A great way to plan your goals for 2021 is to use the SMART acronym.






For example, instead of setting a goal of "Earn more money," break this down into "Get $100 more per month by signing up five monthly subscribers at $20 each by the end of January."

Then, brainstorm on tactics to achieve this goal, such as "Create a monthly subscription deal and email all of my past clients this Friday."

By being more detailed in your goal setting, you're creating a roadmap to a successful year.

Ask yourself: What worked well in your 2020 online fitness business?  ✅

Hindsight is always 20/20, so use it to your advantage and be honest with yourself about what worked well and what didn't in 2020. For example, if you want to increase the number of classes you teach, look at which times were most frequently booked in the previous year.

If you are just starting out, you can research popular times for other instructors or directly ask your past clients.

Pro tip: Keep in mind the time zone of your students. If you schedule a 5 AM EST Yoga Stretch, you may be missing out on students on the West Coast who are still snug in bed.

Identify a new audience to reach in 2021 ✅

Getting out of your comfort zone is never easy, but building your online fitness business starts with growing your client base. The start of the year is always a great time to go after a new audience. Below are a few tips to help you reach a new group.

Let's use "Moms" as an example of a group you would target in 2021.

  • Create a themed class geared towards that specific audience (EX: Quick HIIT for Busy Moms)
  • Use hashtags in your social media posts targeting the new group: (#fitnessmoms, #fitmomsofig, #momworkouts)
  • Partner with an online Mom group and offer to host a class for them on Moxie

Make it “effortless” for your clients to get fit  ✅

In the online business world, on-demand and subscriptions are becoming more and more popular. Clients want the freedom to purchase and consume a product at their leisure.

Take advantage of the "fresh start" mentality of January and offer your attendees a unique "January restart" VOD or subscription package. Also, ask your attendees that they share it with their family and friends.
