Black Leaders Day Instructor Spotlight – Nicole Murray

As a part of our Black Leaders Day celebration, we are sharing the stories of our Black instructors and supporting the causes that matter most to them.

Today we have the opportunity to celebrate Nicole Murray. She taught indoor cycling since 2016. Her classes are a party on the bike, so you’ll hear a mix of Pop, Rock, Hip Hop, EDM, Soca and Reggae.

Q&A with Nicole Murray

  • Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a fitness instructor. How did you get started? Is there an achievement you’re particularly proud of?

I was an avid runner and took part in a lot of races. While training for my second NYC marathon, I found indoor cycling as a good cross-training workout. I fell in love with not only the workout but the joy and community cycling builds. I also loved the fact that anyone can do it. I knew I wanted to bring that joy to people with my personal touch. I decided to get certified, and I’ve never regretted it.

  • What is your coaching philosophy or mantra?

Progress over Perfection. It’s the reason I use FitFocus in my social media handles. No fitness journey is perfect. We need to make being Fit the Focus, not being a certain weight or size. Start where you are, do what you can at the moment, and you’ll get stronger every day. (physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually)

  • What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership means recognizing that each individual is different, and the same approach won’t necessarily work for everyone. It’s essential to listen to what people need and be okay with adjusting when needed.

  • How important is it for you to be a wellness leader in the black community?

The black community is at a higher risk for so many illnesses – diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc. It’s imperative to show that advocating for your health and wellness should be the norm, not the exception. Self-care is not selfish but a necessity. I hope people see me working hard and know it’s possible for them too.

  • We’re excited to get to know the charity you are supporting! Who are they and why are they special to you?

My charity is Black Women’s Health Imperative. They look to address pressing health issues in addition to racial and gender-based challenges for Black women and girls. They provide programs, public health initiatives, education, and outreach to save and extend Black women's lives.

  • Is there someone in the Black community or a figure in history who inspires you and whom you wish more folks knew about? We’d love to hear about them!

Ernestine Shepherd. She has the Guinness World Record as the oldest female bodybuilder. She didn’t start her journey until she was 56. At 84, she still gets up every day and works out (running and lifting weights). She also a personal trainer (mostly senior women). She is stronger and more in shape than people decades younger (including me). She is proof that you can start your fitness journey at any age. There are mornings when I wake up and don’t want to work out; then it occurs to me that she’s already completed her workout for the day, and I get my butt up and get it done.
